Training outdoors can save your life (and make you thinner)

As an outdoor fitness provider we could, and often do, shower you with the benefits of outdoor fitness, of which there are many.

However a new piece of research has drifted across our desk and we thought it was so interesting we would share it with you in this blog. We are big believers in ditching the scales, they don’t give you accurate enough feedback to be used as regularly as we use them, also the are really unhelpful at telling you whether your ‘total weight’ is coming from fat or from muscle, a better measurement to chart your success would be your waist measurement, this is more closely linked to the amount of fat you may be carrying and is linked to a reduction in many of the lifestyle related illnesses, commonly referred to as metabolic syndrome.

So this research has found a link between vitamin D, the vitamin that is produced with daylight, it doesn’t have to be sunny, just bright, and if you spend most of your day indoors with fluorescent lighting then any daylight you are exposed to will help; and strength training, the kind of training we do with kettle bells, resistance bands, hand weights and ropes. The results showed a reduction in waist measurements in just 4 weeks. If you are to combine both of these benefits in the one training program, surely you have a recipe for success.

“The results of the current study demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation improved muscular power in healthy overweight and obese individuals within four weeks and that elevated vitamin D status was associated with greater losses in waist circumference… Waist circumference is also an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the greater decrease in waist circumference associated with higher vitamin D intake represents a potential reduction in risk for metabolic disease and cardiovascular risk.” Dr Mercola
